Screening: The True Story of Tamara de Lempicka & the Art of Survival
Aspen Film and the Aspen Art Museum co-present The True Story of Tamara de Lempicka & the Art of Survival on March 4, 5:00 PM at the Aspen Film Isis Theatre.
“In a world often marked by pain and uncertainty, Tamara de Lempicka’s life and art stand as a testament to resilience and transformation, and her art offers a blueprint for survival, healing, and finding peace amidst the volatility of an ever-changing world.” Remarks Director, Producer, and writer Julie Rubio, “Tamara’s story is a testament to the resilience and the ability to navigate unimaginable hardship; while making this film, I lost both my mother and my best friend, and it gave me a deeper understanding of how much people endure. Tamara lost her homeland twice to war, and her husband, yet she transformed her pain into breathtaking art. Her work reminds us that even in the darkest moments, we can find beauty and create something extraordinary.”
The documentary The True Story of Tamara de Lempicka & The Art of Survival traces the life and survival of the renowned painter through her powerful paintings – from her rise to international stardom in 1920s Paris to her move to the United States fleeing fascism in 1940, to her revival in the current art market. The film follows this remarkable refugee as she reinvents herself multiple times, looking behind the veneer of the publicity she generated for herself and examining the bisexual, Jewish artist who embodied talent, resilience, passion, and a relentless pursuit of artistic freedom.
After the screening, a Q&A will take place hosting the great-granddaughter of Tamara and Aspen resident, Marisa de Lempicka along with award winning director/producer/writer of the film, Julie Rubio. The Q&A will be moderated by Executive Director & Producer of Aspen Real Life, Jillian Livingston.
